EVS Supply is proud to announce its critical role in advancing EarthScope’s Antarctic seismic research by assembling and constructing custom battery packs designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the South Pole. The TLP-93101E battery pack, constructed using bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCl₂) cells, ensures reliable long-term power when solar energy is unavailable and temperatures remain brutally cold.

The TLP-93101E battery, developed in collaboration by Tadiran Batteries and EarthScope, was designed to meet the unique applications and needs of monitoring equipment used in Antarctica. These equipment systems are tasked with recording seismic activity and ice movement, requiring a dependable power source during the months of darkness when solar panels are unable to function and access to the equipment is restricted. With no need for recharging or intervention once deployed, the packs reduced the risk to researchers who would otherwise need to service equipment in dangerous conditions.

The bobbin-type LiSOCl₂ chemistry offers distinct advantages over traditional lithium-ion technology. Known for its exceptionally low self-discharge rate and wide operating temperature range, this chemistry is ideally suited for applications in harsh cold environments. The cells maintain energy output even in sub-zero conditions, making them one of the few viable battery solutions for Antarctic deployment.
EVS Supply was responsible for the precise assembly and construction of these custom battery packs, integrating LiSOCl₂ cells with a Hybrid Layer Capacitor (HLC). The TLP-93101E battery packs provided a self-contained, low maintenance power solution. This design enables the primary cells to continuously charge the HLC, allowing the research equipment to deliver scheduled, uninterrupted high-power data pulses to researchers. Despite evolving project demands, EVS Supply completed the assembly of 50 battery packs within a tight four-month turnaround, demonstrating both technical expertise and operational flexibility.
“Recognizing the immediacy of this order, EVS Supply was able to work with Tadiran’s factory to expedite the required materials. It was a full-court press by all of the involved parties and a great testimony to what excellent team work can accomplish,” said Brett Baker, President of EVS Supply.
The battery packs were delivered in August 2023 and shipped via Coast Guard transport to Antarctica during the region’s brief summer window. Their compact, scalable design allowed for streamlined transport, while the chemistry’s proven resilience meant EarthScope could trust each unit to perform as intended. For this type of long-duration, critical research, the battery packs’ durability, reliability, and cold-weather performance made them ideally suited.
With its proven reputation in research-focused energy solutions, EVS Supply continues to be a trusted partner for organizations operating in the harshest environments on Earth.
